The US Department of Energy (DOE) Commercially Available LED Product Evaluation and Reporting (CALiPER) project was tested from January 2009 to September 2009. A total of 30 products were tested in this round, representing a range of products and technologies that were not used, and using spectroradiometry and goniophotometry. All solid state lighting (SSL) products are tested with reference to the IESNA LM-79-08 measurement method. The test also includes measurement of the surface temperature (measuring the hottest measurable spot on the luminaire). The ninth round of testing mainly includes the following four aspects:
· Recessed downlight · 2'x 2' ceiling recess (plus 2'x2' flat panel light source)
· 4' linear replacement luminaire (tested with bare light and 2'x 4' ceiling recess)
· Small replacement lamp (including 1000 hours of continuous work test)
This round of tests also tested a table lamp. Five fluorescent lamps were tested using absolute metering and were intended as reference lamps (BK). This report outlines the performance test results for each product, discusses the differences between similar products used in traditional light sources, and compares them with the results of the previous rounds of CALiPER projects.
In addition to basic photometric measurements in accordance with IESNA LM-79-08, the CALiPER program performs regular other tests such as dimming, reliability, thermal management, or field performance testing. The standards that have been introduced so far have not been tested in these areas. The CALiPER program is dedicated to developing and defining appropriate test methods with standards organizations, industry trade organizations, and independent test laboratories. For example, absolute photometry is used for bare lamp testing and field testing of linear replacement lamps. Field testing is the installation of a linear replacement luminaire in a concave reflector to detect loss and light distribution of the luminaire. In addition, each test of the CALiPER project selects some products for long-term testing. The report also contains preliminary test results for some recent long-cycle test products.
